Safe Communities Act
Message from the MA League of Women Voters
The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts is a strong supporter of the Safe Communities Act (S.1305/H.3269), state legislation that would protect the health, civil rights, and safety of all state residents in a time of unprecedented targeting of immigrants.
The bill had overwhelming support at its June 9 hearing, including testimony from LWVMA. The bill is now awaiting action by the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.
The bill’s lead sponsors, Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Juana Matias, have written a “Dear Colleague” letter to the Committee Chairs asking for a favorable report of the Safe Communities Act, and we need your state legislator to sign on to the letter. The Safe Communities Coalition also needs feedback on where your legislator stands.
We are asking you to do three things today:
1. Forward this information to at least 10 other people.
2. Beginning on July 17, call your legislators through July 21 and ask them to sign on to the “Dear Colleague” letter circulated by Rep. Matias and Sen. Eldridge. A script is available here, together with a feedback form. We need to flood the State House with calls – consider calling several times.
3. Provide feedback to the Coalition on your legislator’s position – a legislator scorecard is included in the script. This will give the Coalition critical information to inform our lobbying and grassroots mobilizing over the next two months.
