Members of LWVGH attended the Naturalization ceremony at Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA to help welcome 946 new American citizens from 92 countries! This was our 9th participation at one of these ceremonies, but it was by far the most exciting one.
The League members were there to provide voter registration forms for our new citizens. And as it has become the custom, Eva Rajczyk delivered the welcome address from the League and explained how to fill out the forms.
After some delay, the judge arrived. She read the names of the countries that were represented and then the new citizens were sworn in, which was followed by an incredibly robust and unprecedented outburst of cheering that lasted for a number of minutes. When finally everyone settled down, the judge delivered her welcome address, which was funny, poignant, and informative. Her address was especially meaningful to everyone present because she herself is a naturalized citizen from Brazil.
After the judge’s address, a young girl, whose mother had just become a citizen, led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, which was followed by the playing of the National Anthem. At the end of the ceremony, League members were on hand to congratulate our new family members and to collect completed voter registration forms.
We would like to thank Lois Hartman, Kay Herlihy, Jane Hucks, Roz McKeon, Carole Pelchat, Eva Rajczyk, Jean Sanders, and Peggy Toomey for their hard work in registering hundreds of new voters.
We would also like to invite you to enjoy the event through our pictures, which you will find on our Naturalization Ceremony page.
